This gorgeous guy had some serious fun playing dress up recently. (To see the final version of this costume, check out version 2.0 here!)

My husband is, to put it mildly, a HUGE fan of the new Mad Max: Fury Road movie. Huge. And since it's never too early to think about Halloween (It's only July? What? I can't hear you...) we started putting together his Mad Max costume. This is phase one of the costume, or the "we had one night to find whatever we could and slap it together convincingly" phase. But if you're looking for a last minute costume to throw together, this will totally work.

(Can I also mention, he's never posed for pictures before, much less character shots. He did pretty fantastically, didn't he?)

The backpack, knife(s), paracord and boots were already his, as well as the biker boots and cargo pants. The scarf we found at the thrift store.

The big piece was the thrifted leather jacket ($26) and a brownish henley (or as he called it, the "Dexter kill shirt," he's funny!) We hacked the right sleeve off the jacket and used my pumice stone to rough up the edges a bit. I hacked the edges of the sleeves and collar off the shirt, and added a few holes for authenticity.

Our super technical distressing technique was as follows:

I suggested driving over them in my car, but that was deemed too extreme at this moment.

We also took a drive out to an amazing location for test shots. Partially because there was no better place for the kind of hiking we like to do on weekends, and partly because there is no better place for post apocalyptic pictures, check it out:

Why yes, those are partially disintegrated breathing masks. We like our hiking hard core, thank you.

I hope you enjoyed this peek into our process of making Mad Max. Since this was phase 1 of the costume I'll be posting an update closer to Halloween with the final product. We still have to get football pads for the right shoulder, mock-up a knee brace, wrap his left hand in gauze, find and paint Nerf guns, build a gun holster...\

  4. The location for your shoot was perfect for a Mad Max setting. I love that running over the pants was deemed too extreme. =) Thanks for linking up at the Bloggers Brags party this week, I pinned your post to our board. I can't wait to see what you share next week!
