diy trendy sleeveless coat vest sewing tutorial

diy trendy sleeveless coat vest sewing tutorial

These sleeveless coats are freaking everywhere right now. In every fashion magazine and tons of style blogs. I was so skeptical at first. I mean...it has no sleeves. Isn't that kind of the point? You know, warmth. If I want to wear a coat with no sleeves I'd wear my ugly puffer vest. Due to wildly varying weather and not a lot of actual snow an ugly puffer vest is a necessary evil here in southern Idaho.

Then I had an epiphany; you wear the sleeveless coat instead of an ugly puffer vest! Holy crap, I was suddenly 1,000% on board. I loath my puffer vest, if I can replace it with something that looks better and serves the same purpose, I'm in!

So today I'm going to show you how to take 30 minutes out of your day and turn an old coat (or one from the thrift store like mine) into your own trendy sleeveless coat. So that you, too, may avoid the ugly puffer vest trap this fall and winter.

I was inspired by all of the long wool coats I've been seeing without sleeves lately.

you will need

a coat (mine was thrifted for $3!)
a sewing machine or hand sewing needles
thread matching your coat
pins
scissors

the process

Lay your coat out and make sure it's flat. If it's not, you'll get a crooked cut! No one wants crooked arm holes.

Cut off the sleeves of your coat. Make sure you cut them off evenly!

If you're using a heavier coat (mine was woven wool and fully lined) you may want to remove extra padding. This will make it much easier to sew! In the picture above you can see that there was a layer of shoulder padding between the lining and the wool. I just pulled that out.

Pin your arm hole, all the way around. I really recommend making sure that your lining fabric (if you have one) is turned under. This is an extra step, but it means that the lining slips around less and it won't fray as easily.

Sew all the way around your arm hole using your matching thread and a straight stitch. On my coat I needed to use a heavy duty needle in my machine because of the kind of fabric my coat was made out of. If you have a trench coat or light jacket a regular needle will work. Honestly you could do this with a hand needle as well, if you don't have a machine!

That's it, you're done! Congratulations on your trendy sleeveless coat!

I'm pretty excited to style it, but this coat turned out fairly heavy because it's wool. I'm already planning on making a lighter version for early fall. Maybe from a trench coat or blazer?

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! If you're looking for other awesome projects you can check out my diy page. And if you make your own coat, send me a picture I'd love to see it!

  5. Pinning! This is a really neat idea. It would be such a good way to use an old coat when the cuffs start to fray... might have to get out my sewing machine again ;)
