Handy dandy list of paleo approved foods. We're trying paleo: the plan.

This month Noah and I decided to radically overhaul our diet. We already eat fairly healthy if I'm going to be honest, so this isn't a huge change for us. We eat a lot of vegetarian dishes, like curried cauliflower steaks and roasted vegetable pitas already. And we'd already cut a lot of wheat out of our diets as well, so this was the natural next step.

The first step was figuring out what we could eat. I've done grain-free diets before, but when it came to actually going paleo I needed a refresher. I made this basic Cliffs Notes version of our paleo approved/not approved foods for us to use while cooking and planning meals:
Simple list of paleo diet approved foods
So, for us this is not a cleanse. We're not attempting to get rid of toxins or whatever (more power to those of you who do) so we're not going to extremes. We're not eating exclusively grass-fed meats, we're not excluding occasional soy sauce, etc. This is more of an attempt to overhaul how we think about the meals we make, and cut out excess carbs in all forms. When I was doing research I found that most people who make a paleo diet a long term lifestyle change do about an 80/20 split. 80% paleo, 20% 'cheats.' Along those lines we came up with our own list of 'cheats' that will make this diet manageable for us, because there were some things we just weren't willing to give up! We came up with this list that will allow us the things we enjoy most:
Our meal plan for the first week is simple; protein + veggie. Chicken + brussels sprouts, steak + roasted cauliflower, pot roast + carrots, etc. The idea is to get us used to not eating a grain or starch with every meal, and to get us into the habit of shopping for whole ingredients. It looks pretty manageable!

Wish us luck! I'm going to update next week on how we're doing, and in the meantime if you have any tips or tricks for making paleo work for you, I'd love to hear them!

  1. I've always been curious about the Paleo diets. I always thought of it as a strict, which is why I'm glad to learn about the 80/20 statistics you just mentioned. Ive always found that cheats are great way to keep diets consistent. You have to indulge once in a while, but like all others, just in moderation. This post definitely gets me closer to trying the Paleo for a few weeks :)

Thank you for sharing this helpful tip on #SHINEbloghop today, Jessica! So great of you to join us this week!

  4. Good list. I don't think I could do paleo, but it always impresses me when someone else can stick with it. And I always think cheats are a good idea. Everything in moderation.
