Valentine's day craft! Dollar store gold dipped heart dish tutorial

Valentine's day craft! Dollar store gold dipped heart dish tutorial

I don't know if you all have noticed, but there's a little holiday coming up. You know, the one where we all are obsessed with pink and red and hearts? It's Valentine's Day! This Valentine's day I've been working on some cheap and adorable crafts and gifts for you to make and give.

The other day I found this little ceramic heart dish for only $1, and I had a flash of inspiration which became this project. This gold-dipped heart dish is the perfect Valentine's Day gift; it's a heart that you don't feel weird displaying all year, and looks chic sitting on your vanity or bathroom counter to catch jewelry. And, it's incredibly cheap to make!

Isn't it cute? Today I'm going to show you how to make your own gold-dipped heart dish! Keep reading for the full tutorial.

This little gold-dipped heart is so cute, in fact, that I made this one and then promptly plunked it down on my own bathroom counter, where it is currently holding my jewelry that needs to be organized (read: my ever-growing collection of midi rings). I need to go back and get more hearts for actual gifts!

I can even hang my earrings off the side:

You really only need four things to make this sweet project, too!

You will need:

a white ceramic dish (I got mine at the dollar store!)
spray primer in white *optional*
gold spray paint
blue painters tape
glossy clear spray paint

The process:

  1. Wash your dish really well with soap and water, you want to make sure the surface is as clean as possible.
  2. Tape off the parts of your heart that you don't want painted! Make sure the edges of your tape are really stuck down well. I took a fingernail and carefully pressed down any bubbles to make sure the gold paint wouldn't bleed through.
  3. Spray your dish first with primer. This is optional, but will help your gold paint not to bleed and adhere better to the smooth ceramic surface.
  4. Spray with gold paint! Be careful to spray several light coats, to make sure you have an even finish. Remove your tape.
  5. Also kind of optional; After you remove your tape you can spray the whole dish down with a coat of clear gloss finish. This just makes it even sturdier, and the gold will resist chipping.
You're done! Wrap that sweet little heart dish up and gift it! (You know, or keep it for yourself...)

This project is really easy, and would be even easier to do in bulk if you're making more then one. I think these little heart dishes would be especially cute for a teen/tween girl to make and give to her friends! My daughter (who is 7) helped make it and she loved it too, so I'll probably be making one for her as well.
