The skirt you need to make, like, yesterday. DIY romantic sheer maxi sewing tutorial

A pinksplosion! Just in time for Valentine's Day.

I've been going a little crazy with Valentine's Day this year, in case you haven't notice. I made a gold-dipped heart shaped jewelry dish, crocheted a mini heart garland, showed you the personalized kiss print I made for Noah, shared ideas for staying in and still having a romantic date night, and oh...I threw a Valentine's Day party! I've been having so much fun!

This gorgeous skirt is a project I've had in mind for several weeks now, ever since I found this fabric on super ultra sale at the craft store. Its sequins, which I love, and it's the perfect color in which to celebrate Valentine's Day this weekend! Plus, this romantic sheer skirt is easy to make. I mean, pretty much all my projects are easy in one way or another. I had to battle both my kids and my cat to get it finished! But I digress.

I love making myself special pieces to wear around holidays, and I had a ton of fun experimenting with sewing this crazy fun fabric. I'm excited to share this new sewing tutorial with you today!

So click through to get details, and the full instructions so this skirt can be yours, too!

One of my favorite parts of this skirt was the slit up one side.

Side note: This skirt is not lined. I wanted to be able to wear a slip with it, so I have on a nude short slip under my skirt. To, you know, not show my dainties off to the internet!

You will need

sheer sequined fabric (or just sheer fabric)
2 inch wide elastic, cut to the measurement of your waist
thread to match your fabric
scissors
sewing machine

Instructions

First, you'll start out by measuring the length you want your skirt to be. You'll cut your fabric to your length, selvage to selvage (edge to edge) so you have a giant rectangle.

Pin your fabric into a giant tube, wrong sides together. You're only going to pin about halfway down, about four inches from the edge of your fabric. This creates both the slit and the pretty fluttery bits on the edges of the slit. I didn't use a measuring tape for this, just guessed at how far up I wanted my slit.

Sew your side seam using a straight stitch, and set your skirt fabric aside while you make your waistband.

Take your waistband piece and fold it over on itself into a circle, right sides together. Pin, and sew using a straight stitch.

This next step isn't necessary, but adds some strength and a more finished look to your waistband. Fold each side of your elastic seam ends over, then sew them down with a straight stitch, too.

Next you need to mark where you want your gathering to be on the skirt. Because there was a fluttery edge to my slit, I only gathered the six inches or so on either side of my side seam to enhance the look of it being draped.

Pin your elastic right side out, right on top of your skirt fabric. Pin your skirt fabric to the waistband, gathering it as you go between your markers.

Sew with a zig-zag stitch along the bottom edge of the elastic, stretching the elastic out a bit as you go. This helps the fabric stretch a bit as it goes over your hips, and be more form fitting at the waist. Cut off any excess fabric on the inside of your skirt waistband along the seams to finish.

You're done!

And if you've been with me a while, you'll notice one of my first DIY's from last year, my no-sew celfie shirt hack! Still totally cute and gets a ton of wear.
